{"id":72,"date":"2011-09-02T17:16:21","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T17:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.csections.org\/?p=72"},"modified":"2019-06-06T15:17:48","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T15:17:48","slug":"chairman-of-nhs-alliance-apologises-for-mis-use-of-who-target-figure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.csections.org\/?p=72","title":{"rendered":"Chairman of NHS Alliance apologises for mis-use of WHO target figure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation&#8217;s (WHO) <em>OLD<\/em> caesarean target rate of 15% <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">(<a title=\"BBC commentary on WHO retraction\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/10448034\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">retracted 2 years ago<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span> is unfortunately still in circulation and now being used to explain the decision by some PCTs to ban maternal request caeseareans.<\/p>\n<p>I contacted Dr Michael Dixon, Chairman on the NHS Alliance, after he used this figure on a BBC Tees interview with Ali Brownlee and I received this reply. <em>&#8220;Very many thanks for your note about the WHO target rate.\u00c2\u00a0 I stand corrected and wont use the 15% figure again.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thank you Dr Dixon.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately this figure is still being used by other professionals and the media to justify policy and inflame the debate that caesarean rates are simply too high. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Monitoring Emergency Obstetric Care: a handbook\" href=\"http:\/\/whqlibdoc.who.int\/publications\/2009\/9789241547734_eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">WHO admitted<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span> that there is <strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153no empirical evidence for an optimum percentage\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong> and world regions may now <strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153set their own standards\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\"Department of Health\" href=\"http:\/\/www.csections.org\/?p=66\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">England<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span> has decided that they should not set a formal caesarean target rate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation&#8217;s (WHO) OLD caesarean target rate of 15% (retracted 2 years ago) is unfortunately still in circulation and now being used to explain the decision by some PCTs to ban maternal request caeseareans.
